In June 2018 I spent two weeks photographing the original, surviving, members of the Oukloof (now Riebeek Kasteel) community, whom, during the apartheid regime (1965) had been forcibly removed from their homes and fertile farming lands and relocated across the train tracks to the base of the valley, to a place called Esterhof.
I was hugely privileged to hear their stories, be allowed into their homes and make these images. I will never be able to fully understand the hardships that they endured at the hand of the apartheid government but to be able to help bring their stories to life and into the public eye fills me with pride and gratitude.
This photographic series forms part of a much larger project which aims to shed light on other marginalized communities who deserve to have their stories told in the hopes of some form of retribution and reconciliation.
